waddington street, durham

Waddington Street Centre offers support and care to people with enduring mental health problems.  The proposal, funded by the Lottery Commission, was to extend the existing two storey accommodation by adding a third storey and re-organising the internal layout to provide a drop-in centre with café, commercial kitchen and two lounges, craft room, art room/studio, classroom, IT room, photographic/print room, and offices.  The building is in the Durham City Conservation Area, and it was a priority to maintain a visual quality and scale appropriate to its setting.  This was achieved successfully, and the scheme was awarded the City of Durham Trust Award 1999.
