riverside music venue, newcastle

Riverside, the legendary alternative music venue opened in 1985 as a music co-operative run by unemployed young people supported by grant aid from Newcastle City Council. The practice worked with the group from the outset through many phases, converting the redundant Mawson Swan and Morgan printworks to a live performance venue, recording and rehearsal facilities. Riverside hosted many legendary music acts including David Bowie, Nirvana, Oasis, Ian Dury and the Damned, and gave new local bands a unique performance platform to boost their careers.
