improvement for sale

peterlee, cramlington and carlisle - 1980s

A two phase programme, comprising refurbishment of two terraces of poorly constructed concrete houses with flat roofs. The houses were built in Peterlee new town in the 1960s and derelict 20 years later. This was part of the Housing Corporation’s Improvement for Sale programme, aimed to provide affordable accommodation for first time buyers. The scheme gave a new lease of life to around 20 redundant properties, completely demolishing and rebuilding the front and rear walls in well insulated construction, and replacing the flat roofs with traditional pitched roofs.
