durham helicopter museum, shotton colliery
The unique concept, developed by a local retired army pilot and engineer, is to create a museum dedicated to the display of helicopters and aviation history, self-funded by a maintenance and servicing workshop, and incorporating an educational resource centre.
Facilities will include: interactive display area, maintenance and servicing workshop, teaching resource room, exhibition space, café/shop, and outdoor viewing platform.
The sustainable design will incorporate renewable technologies, and rainwater harvesting systems. The Centre will be designed to be fully accessible with a platform lift allowing access to a mezzanine viewing area and outdoor balcony with views over the airfield.
Planning permission has been granted for the scheme, and the clients are seeking further funding for the construction phase of the project.
